Take a drive through time of carriages, horses and history in the rolling hills of Florida’s Horse Country. The showpiece is the Dress Chariot made for the Emperor and Royal Family of Austria. This tour is like a Hallmark Film of the 1800’s come alive. The views are majestic. The Florida Carriage Museum & Resort encompasses over 400 acres of beauty in Central Florida’s horse country. Visitors to the Museum re-live history as they experience one of the finest collections of carriages in the world. They can even take a carriage ride (by prior appointment) on the winding roads through tall oaks draped in Spanish Moss, around the Qin Dynasty Gardens and past the exotic Japanese Koi Pond. Horses abound: a rare Poitou donkey named “Nicolette” and her best friend, a Miniature Horse named “Gracie”, welcome visitors and look for a scratch on the head. The Museum houses one of the largest, privately owned collections of carriages in the world. It is open to the public and there are more than 160 meticulously restored carriages, including the 1840’s Dress Chariot formerly owned by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. The Resort features 24 well appointed residences and 10 barns that serve as an equine “Bed & Barn.” Some guests bring their horses to train for the winter months, a weekend, or just for the day. Others come without horses to enjoy the miles of walking/carriage trails and can often be spotted having a picnic under the shady oak trees.
The nearby Villages is one of the most successful real estate projects ever conceived. The land area of the Villages is now the second largest city in Florida after Jacksonville. It has 3 town centers comprised of different themes such as Marina, Spanish Springs and soon opening will be a new Old Cracker Florida area. These town centers are walking distances from the homes and have daily entertainment, shops, restaurants, and hotels in a setting conducive to walking around and taking in the views. The grounds are meticulously cared for and landscaped and can all be reached by convenient golf cart trails. The fact that you can go to the movies and or the grocery store by golf cart is one of the major attractions of this 55 plus style community. Golf, Bowling and hundreds of clubs reflecting a multitude of hobbies and educational opportunities are available to the numerous residents. Our tour of the facilities will include the Polo Grounds which are considered to be the best in the USA and modeled after the Royal Ascot Racetrack in Britain used in the Movie, “My Fair Lady” with Rex Harrison. Jonathon Dickinson State Park Nature Boat Ride and Blowing Rocks Preserve Mini Old Faithful!
The Loxahatchee Queen II takes visitors on a two-hour tour of the river, with a stop at the restored camp of Trapper Nelson, the "Wildman of the Loxahatchee." At the site, park staff lead visitors around the grounds and buildings of a true Florida original, who made his living off the land as a trapper and fur trader. Once fame caught up with Trapper, however, he evolved himself and his home into one of the area's first tourist attractions, "Trapper's Zoo and Jungle Gardens." Trapper's unsolved death in 1968 gives a fitting sense of mystery to the site. Trapper's is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday through Monday, and is accessible only by private canoe or boat or by the concession's tour boat.
After 50 years of protecting Florida’s great places, The Nature Conservancy considers Blowing Rocks Preserve a top success story. This peaceful, barrier island sanctuary is a well known model for large-scale, native coastal habitat restoration. The carefully restored habitats found here are disappearing fast from many Florida islands! And, a number of endangered plants and animals call this special place home – including three rare sea turtle species.
The preserve was named for its rocky Anastasia limestone shoreline – the largest on the U.S. Atlantic coast. During extreme high tides and after winter storms, seas break against the rocks and force plumes of saltwater up to 50 feet skyward. It’s an impressive sight.
